Many of you asked us if we had anything against princesses and why we weren't creating a Princess themed book.
No, we have nothing against princesses. We like beautiful dresses and fancy crowns.
But as a toy maker and parents with young children, we were concerned with the messages of the dominant princess industry currently marketed to our children.
How about a princess who is independent and accomplished, diverse and fierce ?
This princess in our Princess Day Out quiet book is a vital alternative to the damsel-in-distress archetype children regularly consume in movies, TV and books and in the toy aisles.
Not only does she decide when to wear the crown and take it off, she lives by herself in her palace, rides her own carriage, sets several adventures with her pet unicorn, loves to wear gowns and dresses and learn a martial art of two (a fine motor activity here :) ) , if you please.
So far she's making good on her mission.
And she does it all without a Prince Charming!
In your stories to children, while engaging with the book, you can imagine the princess to be tasked with several adventures that defy gender norms.
Our little girls and boys are looking for empowered role models. In honour of them, here is a princess having a wonderful day out, embodying total girl power.

1) On the first page is the crowning - learn to button and unbutton.
2) The second page encourages zipping and use of elastic closures.
3) The third page allows practicing snap buttons.
4) The fourth page is the exciting braiding!
5) The fifth page entails threading, lacing and knotting.
6) The sixth and seventh page is working with velcro hooks and loops.
